Ok, I have to admit something...

[blush]I'm confused[/blush]

How exactly does the process of registering a domain name and all of that work? Do you have to pay money? Who gets that money? What services are recommended?

Josh, what did you use to get the domain "ki4bbo.org"?

Muah ha ha ha! How the mighty have fallen!

Well, I am not entirely sure myself.

Yes, you have to pay money. You have to find a registrar, there are many, but one of the most popular is http://www.godaddy.com . A friend registered ki4bbo.org for me.. so I can't be too much help there.

Josh

-update- I didn't say the first parapraph, thats Dereks evil doing..

Well, I looked into the process a few months ago (I was trying to reigister a domain on my own--didn't work.) Well, it begins with ICANN: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. In order to be able to actually register a domain name, first you must become ICANN-Accredited.

To begin you must begin submitting for accredition, which bears a $2,500 registration fee.

IF you become accredited, you must then pay an annual fee of $4000 for the first TLD you wish to be able to register in and then $500 for any other TLD's.

At this point, you would be able to start offering your services in domain registration. Total cost: $6,500-$10,500 initially and $4,000-$6,500 annually after that.

I think I'll stick with letting someone else register it for me.

Well, I did a little research (looked at the archives for my local LUG) and learned about DNS a bit more.

As far as registeration goes there were a few bad reviews about godaddy.com. People recommended dyndns.org or gkg.net...

I guess it really doesn't matter now; I'm not really interested in getting a domain, I was just curious (for the future perhaps).

I used that when I was using doing hosting off my own computer, before I got a router which loused things up. It works well, you get a sub-domain of dyndns.org. AND, t'is free! You just need to know the hosting server's IP.

Yeah, I was actually checking that out the other day. The system administrator at my school (who I am a TA for and help with IT stuff) has a domain @ dyndns.org... pretty sweet setup (and free). Unfortunately I am not running a server (56k at home... ughhh - can't wait for college and T1)

*grumbles about a friend at school who only uses his computer for Runescape, yet has a 1mb connection* Such a waste...
