Microsoft insists that IE is part of the Windows OS and it is not a stand alone product.
Maybe that is why Windows is the Titanic of the OS world and has not much time left.

Use FireFox or become a security expert folks.

The IE for Windows is built into Windows. The Mac version is stand alone. No one should just forget about IE. In alot of ways it is better than Firefox. One, it interacts with the Propietary DOM more efficiently, It has more Javascript functions ( what allows the Clicksor context ads to run), and it allows P3P Privacy. Here are the statistics of my site ( browser uses) since it first opened on Jan. 8:
MSIE 15872 57.3 %
Msie 6.0 No 15398 55.6 %
Msie 5.5 No 258 0.9 %
Msie 5.01 No 56 0.2 %
Msie 5.0 No 160 0.5 %
NETSCAPE 803 2.9 %
Netscape 7.2 No 770 2.7 %
Netscape 7.1 No 33 0.1 %
OTHERS 10998 39.7 %
Firefox No 9629 34.7 %
Mozilla No 1084 3.9 %
Unknown ? 239 0.8 %
Opera No 46 0.1 %

You're right. IE isn't the worst thing ever. It is good at times. You need it for Windows Updates (which incidentally, I've been told not to get unless there is a service pack available) and it loads quicker than firefox.
Firefox has disadvantages. It is a massive memory hogger. Not all HTMl codes work with it. I'm sure there are many other problems with it. canadadrugstop.com

Just because it has large market share does not mean it is good, IE is part of the flawed Windows OS, never meant from the start to be an online OS.
IE was not even invented by Microsoft but the technology for the flawed browser was acquired from Spyglass at the last minute when Gates missed the internet just to run Netscape out of the business.
Gates got lucky, his luck is running out with Linux desktops coming.
